Just Eat is known throughout the UK as a great way to get food delivered to your door, but behind that enterprise is a team of highly skilled techies exploring every possible way to get you the food you want as easily as possible.
This includes developing automated takeaway-delivery robots, chatbots that uses machine learning to guess what type of food you may want from your facial expression, Apple TV applications that let you split the cost of your takeaway between friends, Alexa apps, Hololens apps, Xbox apps, Virtual reality experiences – you name a cutting-edge technology, and Just Eat is exploring the possibilities the tech can offer the food-ordering community.
The company also has a big commitment to open-source technology [https://tech.just-eat.com/open-source/]. As Just Eat says on its website, “Just Eat is constantly innovating and every now and again we come up with something super neat that we can’t find an ‘out-of-the-box’ answer to; which we would like to contribute back to the community in the hope of solving some more of those common problems.”
The Just Eat tech team pride themselves on experimentation and learning from failure. As Craig Pugsley, Just Eat’s Principal UX Engineer says, “We have a wonderfully liberating principle of failing early and failing fast; it’s our job to fail those nine times so that we can get to that one time that is the absolutely killer success.” So, if you are interested in product research using the some of the most innovative technology tools out there, Just Eat’s Bristol R&D department want to hear from you.
Just Eat Takeaway.com has a world-leading data platform and has been successful in rolling out machine learning (ML) across the organisation. Now we’re looking for a Technical Product Manager to take it to the next level.
You will become an expert in the problems faced in developing ML solutions at scale, and create vision, strategy, roadmap and in-team backlog to deliver maximum business impact. This is a critical role at the heart of a data-hungry organisation.
The role would suit someone who’s passionate about data and software development, who has already cut their teeth on some interesting ML engineering challenges (in a product, engineering or data science capacity) and is eager to build platform capabilities to solve them at scale across a wide range of use cases. Our online models have to handle thousands of requests per minute with sub-200ms latency and 99.95% uptime. We want data scientists to be able to iterate on these at pace and increase the coverage of teams working with ML (by an order of magnitude), all whilst balancing our impressive reliability record.
The remit of the team includes all of the platform capabilities for training, deploying, evaluating and tuning ML models and features, including associated data pipelines.
You will be accountable and responsible for:
Problem space: Building an expert understanding of your internal customers and their problems, challenges and product opportunities. Prioritising those problems and opportunities. Measuring and monitoring product performance, including defining KPIs.
Strategy and roadmap: Developing vision, strategy and roadmap and defining quarterly goals, in collaboration with the Heads of Product, Engineering, Delivery and Data Science. Aligning with wider platform and architecture strategies in support of product and business needs.
Product backlog: Building a short term product backlog in line with the strategic goals, in close collaboration with the team. Writing clear user stories.
Communication and stakeholders: Clearly communicating with stakeholders throughout the product development process and managing expectations.
You will play an important role in:
Execution: Working effectively in an agile environment to deliver product increments and ensure that requirements are met. Ensuring timely delivery across supporting/dependant teams in support of agreed goals.
Team culture: Fostering a strong, cohesive team with a high degree of collaboration, a customer-centric focus, and high standards around operational excellence. Articulating the vision and strategy to the team to keep them motivated and focused.
Evangelising: Driving adoption of the new platform tools and standards, influencing across the org – including the wider community of data scientists and product development teams.

Your Profile & Experience
A highly collaborative, visible and inclusive approach
Passion and positivity about ‘being better’ with the ability to create an appetite for continuous improvement across the organisation.
Evidence of collaborating and influencing effectively across teams in a broad organisation.
Experience of leading software product delivery in an agile team, including setting goals, tracking progress, and course-correcting to ensure goals are met. Experience managing a backlog for a team with primary responsibility for roadmap definition and execution over 6+ months.
Prior experience of defining vision and strategy for a problem space would be advantageous.
Bonus points if you have experience of leading the development of an internally-focused product, ideally with developers or data scientists as customers. E.g. connecting with internal customers through interviews, focus groups and workshops, synthesising key insights, validating problems and constructing clear problem statements that tackle the root cause.
Ability to build and execute an internal “go to market” plan for internal customers, e.g. comms, documentation, workshops etc.
Clear, succinct written and verbal communication in English
Passion for data and ML engineering, and a familiarity with ML algorithms.
Some knowledge of the pitfalls and best-practices in building, deploying and operating production ML workloads, inc. training, prediction/generation and feature engineering. Minimum 1+ years’ experience in teams delivering production ML use-cases.
Vision for what great ML platform capabilities look like. Bonus points if you’ve been involved in ML platform development before.
Familiarity with software architecture in a cloud environment -ideally including data lakes, ML platforms, feature stores and microservice architecture.
Familiarity with test automation, continuous delivery and continuous integration, including the additional challenges of guaranteeing quality in data pipelines.
Ability to engage and contribute (not lead) in technical discussions with engineers and stakeholders.
