Graphcore has created a completely new processor, the Intelligence Processing Unit (IPU), specifically designed for artificial intelligence. The IPU’s unique architecture means developers can run current machine learning models orders of magnitude faster. More importantly, it lets AI researchers undertake entirely new types of work, not possible using current technologies, to drive the next great breakthroughs in general machine intelligence.

We believe our IPU technology will become the worldwide standard for artificial intelligence compute. The performance of Graphcore’s IPU is going to be transformative across all industries and sectors whether you are a medical researcher, roboticist or building autonomous cars.

Our team is at the forefront of the artificial intelligence revolution, enabling innovators from all industries and sectors to expand human potential with technology. What we do, really makes a difference.

We are looking for a team lead to grow a system engineering team which is tasked with the development and running of tests designed to analyse the reliability, quality and performance of our AI systems.  These systems consist of dedicated Graphcore devices, hardware and software coupled with standard high-end servers, memory systems, networking and Linux stacks.  As Team Lead, you will be managing and interacting with highly skilled engineers and will be involved in the detail, so a strong hands-on approach is a requirement.

The Engineering team at Graphcore is responsible for developing ground-breaking AI technology involving custom ASIC design, advanced hardware platforms and complex software.  Various engineering and operations teams are responsible for testing and delivering individual hardware and software components.  The purpose of the System QA team is to understand and continuously validate the robustness and performance of the complete system at all levels.  Some of these tools will also be deployed to customers for commissioning and testing of their installations.

The System QA team will need to understand all levels of the Graphcore AI system.  However, the key skills required in order to test at system level will be understanding, integrating and developing software and scripts.  Automation and data analysis will also be required.  Detailed knowledge of artificial intelligence models is not required – this is all about the platform and tools.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:

  • Grow and manage a team of engineers tasked with ensuring the performance and quality of complete Graphcore systems.
  • Understand the key aspects of Graphcore hardware and software which can impact performance and reliability for our customers.
  • Understand the key aspects of 3rd party servers, networking and software which can impact performance and reliability for our customers.
  • Develop tests and scripts which validate the integration of the various hardware and software components into a complete system. Much of the low-level tests can be leveraged from individual engineering teams.
  • Manage the ability to test hardware and software at sufficient scale to ensure that large-scale deployments and updates to customers have great quality and reliability.
  • Continuous analysis of system-level data to check for interactions and regressions otherwise missed by hardware manufacture and software unit CI testing.
  • Review the existing Continuous Integration testing in place throughout the software organisation and ensure that any gaps are filled at the system level.

  • Solid software engineering experience.
  • Experience of high-performance computer systems running Linux operating systems.
  • Experience of advanced electronic hardware platform design.
  • Excellent communication, presentation and relationship management skills.
  • An ability to work independently without daily oversight.
  • Solid analytical skills, and the ability to clearly communicate requirements at different levels.
  • An understanding of priorities, risks, issues, impacts and constraints.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.

We welcome people of different backgrounds and experiences and are committed to building an inclusive work environment that makes Graphcore a great home for everyone. We are an equal opportunity employer and want to build a work environment where everyone is happy, productive and respectful so they can do their best work. If you have a disability or additional need that requires accommodation, just let us know.

Please note, we are only considering candidates who have an established right to work in the UK for roles based in Bristol, UK.
