  • Full Time
  • Bristol

Help us build an ecosystem around automated language assessment and make a real difference to learners of English worldwide.

English Language iTutoring (ELiT) are looking for Software Engineers to join our growing software team in Bristol.

We build ground-breaking English Language Learning applications and automated language assessment technology.  We work at the interface of EdTech software engineering and world-leading Natural Language Processing research from Cambridge University.

Harnessing Machine Learning, our Write & Improve and Speak & Improve applications are used by hundreds of thousands of learners and teachers worldwide, while our automarker technology delivers exam results to candidates without delay. Our internal annotation tools are used to enrich learner data and improve the performance of our machine learning pipeline.

    Your role

As a core member of our software development team, you will:

    • ⭐️  Help develop ELiT’s system of services, single-page applications, data warehouse and analytics pipeline
    • ⭐️  Write high-quality code that is well designed, peer reviewed, and thoroughly tested and documented
    • ⭐️  Provision AWS infrastructure, deploying services and monitoring them in production.
    • ⭐️  Work in a collaborative and inclusive agile environment and help to improve our processes
    • ⭐️  Collaborate with our NLP and Machine Learning specialists to deliver automarker updates and provide data and tools to support their research

Here are some of the languages and technologies we currently use:

    • ⭐️  Our backend services are mostly written in Clojure, and some Ruby
    • ⭐️  Our client applications are written in ClojureScript (shadow-cljs, reagent and re-frame)
    • ⭐️  AWS is our cloud infrastructure provider
    • ⭐️  We use Terraform for provisioning our infrastructure

We have a mature and progressive approach to software engineering and working with technology in general.  We embrace principles and processes that help us deliver quality software, including automated testing, continuous integration and delivery, automated deployment and support. Our ways of working are always evolving; if something’s not working, we change it.

    Who we are

ELiT was formed in 2015 with the goal of taking computational linguistics research and applying it to English Language Learning.  We now operate as part of Cambridge Assessment English and Cambridge University Press, who are world leaders in English language assessment and educational publishing.

We currently have eight engineers in our Bristol office and a small remote team who specialise in language education and data science.

The pandemic requires all of us to work remotely for the time being, and we are looking forward to more flexible working when it’s safe to return to the office.

    Who we’re looking for

We’re looking for enthusiastic Software Engineers, both recent graduates and those with several years of experience.  While experience working with some of our technologies would be ideal, your potential and your willingness to learn is more important. What we’re looking for is:

    • ⭐️  A Computer Science degree or equivalent
    • ⭐️  A good knowledge of at least one programming language
    • ⭐️  Experience of, or an interest in, functional programming
    • ⭐️  You care about building products that empower English language learners around the globe

The following skills are not essential but would be nice to have:

    • ⭐️  Commercial experience with at least one programming language
    • ⭐️  Clojure or ClojureScript experience
    • ⭐️  Frontend experience in JavaScript, HTML and CSS
    • ⭐️  Experience provisioning and managing infrastructure on AWS
    • ⭐️  Experience working on ETL pipelines and databases
